The Farmers Bank Offers Tips for the Equifax Data Breach

A significant confirmed breach has been reported by Equifax, a major credit reporting bureau. Equifax reports that hackers were able to access certain files in their system containing social security numbers, birth dates, addresses, some driver’s license and credit card information.

The Farmers Bank communicates with all major credit bureaus to assist customers in securing accounts; please know that The Farmers Bank has not been breached.

The Farmers Bank is monitoring the situation closely and recommends the following actions:

  1. Check to see if you are affected at https://equifaxsecurity2017.com. Checking maiden names and children’s names are a good idea too. Equifax will promote their own monitoring service on this site whether you are impacted or not. You are not required to enroll in order to check the site, and you may pay fees and risk future legal recourse with Equifax by enrolling.
  2. Consider freezing or placing a fraud alert on your credit with each of the bureaus, making it much harder for someone to open accounts in your name. There are four consumer credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, Innovis and Trans Union. There may be a small fee for Indiana residents to freeze or unfreeze your report.
  3. Check your credit reports for free using www.annualcreditreport.com or another trusted service and monitor your accounts closely, including bank and credit cards.

Additional information on identity theft and freezing or placing alerts on your credit reports can be found at: www.ftc.gov.
